News WFH Publishes Haemophilia Issue on Rare Bleeding and Clotting Disorders January 2009 The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) devoted the November 2008 issue of its journal Haemophilia to a discussion of rare bleeding and clotting disorders. The issue was a collaborative effort first conceived by physician subcommittee members appointed by the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) of the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF). For individuals with these rare conditions, obtaining an accurate diagnosis and obtaining appropriate treatment can be difficult. WFH’s purpose in dedicating an entire issue of its journal to this topic was to develop a readily available resource of these rare conditions for healthcare providers throughout the world. The issue contains 17 review articles, covering such rare deficiencies as factors V, VII, XI and XIII; inherited thrombophilia conditions, such protein C and S deficiencies; and antithrombin deficiency. Several of the review articles were authored by current MASAC members, including Amy Shapiro, MD, Prasad Mathew, MD, Donna DiMichele, MD, Peter A. Kouides, MD, Marion Koerper, MD, and Paul Monahan, MD. To make this material as widely and easily available as possible, Wiley-Blackwell, the publishers of Haemophilia, have agreed to post the papers in this special edition on the Web sites of both NHF and WFH. |
