Advocacy
The Central Ohio Chapter of NHF’s Advocacy Program includes any service where the chapter speaks on behalf of the bleeding disorders community in an effort to make changes that would benefit the community or even just one individual within the community.
The most common type of advocacy we do is legislative advocacy. This is done at both the state and national level.
- Statehouse Day – We work with the Ohio Bleeding Disorders Council to organize a one-day event where people with bleeding disorders from all around the State of Ohio converge in Columbus to talk to each state legislator about the issues that are important to our community. This event typically takes place in April.
- Washington Days – Our chapter participates in NHF’s Washington Days, which draws hundreds of people from all around the country to our nation’s capitol to “storm the hill” in an effort to bring our issues to light. When funds are available, the chapter will sponsor one family to attend this amazing event.
Other types of advocacy in which we sometimes engage include:
- State Agency Advocacy – Where we get involved with state agencies whose policies and actions affect all or a portion of the bleeding disorders community.
- Insurance Advocacy – Where we get involved with individual insurance companies or the state’s Department of Insurance to correct unfair practices that harm the bleeding disorders community.
- Hemophilia Industry Advocacy – Where we put pressure on pharmaceutical manufacturers and specialty pharmacy companies to act in the best interest of the bleeding disorders community.
- Personal Advocacy – Where we can intervene to help an individual or family resolve any number of issues at their school, workplace, athletic team, etc.
The more voices we have, the louder we become, the more we are heard. So get invovled in this area by contacting our office. Also, if you ever need someone to advocate on your behalf, please do not hesistate to give us a call and explain your situation.
